I’ve had my orchid for a while now. I was worried my poor little plant was dying. I cannot find the same answer online, everything I rewd is completely different. By cutting the shoot back entirely it allows the plant to gather more energy for a greater bloom next year. It’s nearly impossible to recover when there’s a strong indication of damage or a positive sign of dying. Another cause can be otherwise docile water and fertilizer impurities building up over time in the potting media. Also, I was wondering if it is important to trim around the “nodes”? They have a way of staying unnoticed to the human eye until the flowers have opened and the ever present chewed-away outer edge of your favorite orchid flowers appear. I have cut one stem all the way back and used the cinnomon as suggested. If the spots do spread or become larger or are soft and watery, then it’s most likely a bacteria/fungal problem and should be treated as such. When we buy these orchids they have been through a lot of trauma before we get them and then we think we killed them. The plany/leaves are growing get new leaves but no flower and no new spike. No Drainage

I had my orchid in my kitchen window and it bloomed all summer a friend told me to cut the stem back so I did to the base and it has since grown one new leaf and now started a second one but no sign of a new stem? Black rot or bulb rot are the likely disease culprits causing the change in color of the orchid’s stem. If it’s been many years since you’ve repotted this would probably be the case. My problem is that both have now started to show light brown flecks/dots on the petals and the orchid is starting to look weary. Hi there, I have two orchids that have no stems! It does not matter what time of day it is when watering. When a new stem grows it will be from an entirely differently spot. This has happened to me before. I read once there are a few out there like this. The plant is generating new leaves so it’s still alive. Sometimes increasing watering to two or three times a week cures the problem, but other times the dehydration is a sign that the roots have ceased functioning and absorbing water. If you catch them, discard as you see fit. I feel it is growing nicely but my question is when can I expect new flower growth? The first stem, the year I received it, bloomed great. The number one piece of advice that I can offer is to be diligent no matter how small the problem may seem. Also, my leaves aren’t perky and have wrinkles. Your welcome! Just make sure they have drainage (a lot are sold in non-draining pots) and you are watering it only when it’s dry and you should be good. This is very important; sometimes you need to take one step back to take one step forward. I found my beautiful Paphiopedilum Orchid at a Food Lion of all places and it grew and had lovely blooms for two months and then the blooms started to fall off (which I expected), and then the stem started to die (even though the stem had already started growing a new shoot to rebloom) and brown (killing the new shoot). I have since re-potted it into a clear plastic cup with good drainage holes and used a bark based orchid soil. if its new growth I want to encourage it but having googled a lot i can’t find any examples of this! Sometimes older back bulbs on sympodial orchids will turn brown in appearance and become mushy and decayed. If not controlled they can cause leaf and flower deformities and yellowing of the foliage.
