I’ve had my orchid for a while now. I was worried my poor little plant was dying. I cannot find the same answer online, everything I rewd is completely different. By cutting the shoot back entirely it allows the plant to gather more energy for a greater bloom next year. It’s nearly impossible to recover when there’s a strong indication of damage or a positive sign of dying. Another cause can be otherwise docile water and fertilizer impurities building up over time in the potting media. Also, I was wondering if it is important to trim around the “nodes”? They have a way of staying unnoticed to the human eye until the flowers have opened and the ever present chewed-away outer edge of your favorite orchid flowers appear. I have cut one stem all the way back and used the cinnomon as suggested. If the spots do spread or become larger or are soft and watery, then it’s most likely a bacteria/fungal problem and should be treated as such. When we buy these orchids they have been through a lot of trauma before we get them and then we think we killed them. The plany/leaves are growing get new leaves but no flower and no new spike. No Drainage

I have been caring for my first orchid – a lovely store-bought Phal – that I have recently transferred into an appropriate pot, with new bark, and started a feeding cycle. Now this ‘baby’ is the tallest out the bunch and growing stronger by the day however it now has what looks like little seedling bushes bursting out of the stem. I had my orchid in my kitchen window and it bloomed all summer a friend told me to cut the stem back so I did to the base and it has since grown one new leaf and now started a second one but no sign of a new stem? Black rot or bulb rot are the likely disease culprits causing the change in color of the orchid’s stem. If it’s been many years since you’ve repotted this would probably be the case. My problem is that both have now started to show light brown flecks/dots on the petals and the orchid is starting to look weary. It also started a new bloom bud at the end, but it never grew and is still there now months later. ©My First Orchid [2010-2018]. P.p.s Both spikes are pointing in completely opposite directions. My question is that I have a Phal that has had 2 beautiful spikes which produced about a dozen blooms over a 7 mos period.
The ‘stems’ are less than an inch from the base and are brown and dried up [like hard sticks] but no signs of new growth and no new stems. The result will be that the leaves on your orchid will turn yellow or brown in a few days. Where to cut?
Hi there, I have two orchids that have no stems! It does not matter what time of day it is when watering. When a new stem grows it will be from an entirely differently spot. This has happened to me before. I read once there are a few out there like this. The plant is generating new leaves so it’s still alive. Sometimes increasing watering to two or three times a week cures the problem, but other times the dehydration is a sign that the roots have ceased functioning and absorbing water. If you catch them, discard as you see fit. I feel it is growing nicely but my question is when can I expect new flower growth? The first stem, the year I received it, bloomed great. Do you have any insight as for how to care for this double-spike orchid? Thanks so much! PLEASE help, will the stem ever grow back and rebloom ?? Also how much and how often do you water it? Thanks. I recently bought an orchid that has a double stem/flower spike. I purchased a beautiful Phalaenopsis this summer in full bloom, and the blooms recently fell off. Shoulf i go ahead and cut back the spikes to replenish the leaves that look like theyre rotting to conserve its energy? READ THIS FIRST!! Water and leach your pots thoroughly when needed to avoid this problem. Yes. Should I cut the two stems completely off, flush to the base?

The number one piece of advice that I can offer is to be diligent no matter how small the problem may seem. Also, my leaves aren’t perky and have wrinkles. Your welcome! Treat the plant with a bactericide/fungicide made for use ON plants (such as Phyton 27, Captan, Thyomil, etc) or sprinkle cinnamon over the area. That is really interesting. This helps transfer the energy. It’s a natural fungicide. That’s why I cut them off to conserve energy… But you make a very valid point. So if its Summer and super hot then maybe I water more but its totally based on how dry the mix is. Now that third stem have bloomed for several months and I trimmed it back when the flowers fell off. You can always apply some cinnamon which is a natural fungicide but it should heal on its own. In this case clip it just above a node (node is explained in that post I sent you). Is this normal?

If the flowering is apart of the same stem you can cut the brown part off or leave it and wait till the whole thing is done flowering to cut it.
Just make sure they have drainage (a lot are sold in non-draining pots) and you are watering it only when it’s dry and you should be good. This is very important; sometimes you need to take one step back to take one step forward. I found my beautiful Paphiopedilum Orchid at a Food Lion of all places and it grew and had lovely blooms for two months and then the blooms started to fall off (which I expected), and then the stem started to die (even though the stem had already started growing a new shoot to rebloom) and brown (killing the new shoot). Also, am I able to trim the top of the other stem even though there are still blossoms there? You see, it is completely normal for flower spikes to turn brown after an orchid is finished blooming.

I have since re-potted it into a clear plastic cup with good drainage holes and used a bark based orchid soil. if its new growth I want to encourage it but having googled a lot i can’t find any examples of this! Sometimes older back bulbs on sympodial orchids will turn brown in appearance and become mushy and decayed. If not controlled they can cause leaf and flower deformities and yellowing of the foliage.
