Jazz Club (2013) is an attempt to create the ambiance of the obvious, and mixes woody aromatics, spices, booze, tobacco, and a semi-animalic base to give off a convincing snapshot of a sweaty night at your favorite dimly-lit hangout. Smooth gourmand type fragrance. Not overpowering enough that it can be worn everyday. Despite the non-smoking rules which persist across the US the idea of the smoky jazz club remains and while I think a Brooklyn club in 2013 would be smoke free with nary a cigar in sight; Mme Massenet’s choice to base Jazz Club on the twin pillars of booze and tobacco works very well. The leather adds a nice little bit of depth but I'm not so sure I'm enjoying the composition. Stunning! Syrupy sweet tobacco-rum combo with a nice leather note. I wear this many days in a row. Replica is a line by Maison Martin Margiela that tries to capture moments in time, much like Byredo does with their "scent memories", but with more specificity. Exactly how I would imagine a Jazz Club/Bar to smell....lot of boozy notes and that gorgeous tobacco base. I don't think its evocative of a jazz club or another smoky, dark environ. What a sexy scent! 5/10. This is a nice boozy fragrance. While the sweetness is still almost cloying, the tobacco and leather notes are well blended and pleasant. It's also a rare thing to see a tobacco fragrance in the 21st century that isn't absolutely drowning in tonka bean, letting the leafiness of the main note sit alone in the base and shine, as opposed to being thickened and enriched into something rounder like what you catch coming from a pipe smoker, which is what the "tonkabacco" fragrances usually go for. It did a really nice job at capturing the smells of the carnival; candy apples along with sweet and sultry accords capture the humidity of the evening. This is gonna be my new signature scent.It has the perfect balance in my opinion.
As if movie popcorn could go sour. Mme Massenet paints a perfect picture of a night in a jazz joint enjoying the fine music, alcohol, and cigars. It's basically a strong blend of rum and vanilla to my nose.
All at once. I can see why it would work well for others, and it has a certain amount of complexity I can admire. The rum is of the dark, sweet, spiced variety and the tobacco is of the (also) sweet, cherry-like pipe variety. It turned into a powdery old lady smell on me, and it was nuclear to boot. Same happened with Bentley Intense, so I'm not quite sure what could be happening.
