Now, if you are using a gathering foot, your piece to be ruffled goes under the presser foot, as normal (the upper section of the foot is for the piece NOT to be ruffled, when joining two pieces). I know this is an old post but you have just saved my sanity!

If you are NOT using a gathering foot, simply put your fabric under the presser foot and sew. Yes it does, it actually works GREAT for that! I have used it a few times since and always am pleased with it, not to mention it saves so much time because it’s also serging the raw edge. I had learned how to gather with clear elastic… better then doing it by hand, but not super easy either unless it is just light gathering.
I appreciate you. Sometimes Differential Feed is used to correct stretching or gathering of fabrics as they are fed through the serger. some machines don’t like it that high! I didn’t take two pictures, but both times I did this (with and without the gathering foot) the end result looked like this. The gather is not as nice, but it is is very easy to adjust because you have the traditional pull strings. I now am a fabric stash collector.

STEP 2: Adjust differential (if you machine has it) & Stitch Length. I recommend testing with a curved seam, so you can tell what’s going to happen as you go over the straight, crosswise and bias of the fabric. That’s because it uses a lot more threads. Your tutorial was simple to follow and the gathering came out great.
No because this does NOT hold a garment or 2 pieces of fabric together, you still have to attach it with a traditional seam that you back stitch at the start & end. oh oh oh oh me!
I just got a corrected, smooth seam.
We’ve got serger classes at least once a month and our Sewing Club is always full of happy serger enthusiasts. WHAT A GREAT SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT. This process is a little bit of trial & error… every machine is different as well as fabric. Thanks. Serger tension can be tricky for the beginner sewist. What other questions do you have about sergers? I have a brother serger 1034D My problem is the needles keep coming unthreaded when I try to sew. My sewing machine is in the shop and I needed to make more ruffles for my dresses and tanks.

Just loosen the pressure foot, turn the tension all the way up & set the stitch length to the highest on your machine, you want a basting stitch.
